Chubb Hall (originally Chubb Library) was erected on the northwest side of the College Green to balance campus symmetry just after Memorial Auditorium had been erected on the northeast side, Chubb Library officially opened in 1931. Coming in at a final building cost of $350,000, Chubb Library’s exterior was designed in the Georgian style of Cutler, Wilson, and McGuffey Halls to preserve the University’s aesthetic.
Chubb Library was originally intended to house 75,000 volumes, but that number was vastly exceeded by the late 1960s, and Alden Library was built to replace it. Meanwhile, Chubb Library became Chubb Hall, a building which now houses student services administrative offices for the University, such as admissions, the bursar, Office of the Registrar, and University College.

Chubb Library was named for Edwin Watts Chubb, Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences for nearly 20 years from 1907 to 1936, and president of Ohio University on two separate occasions. Born in Lebanon, Pennsylvania in 1865 into the family of a minister, Chubb began teaching immediately after his graduationfrom Lafayette College in 1887. He received his MA from Lafayette in 1990, and he later attended Cambridge University in England, earning his Doctor of Literature degree in 1906. Chubb served as president of Albright College in Myerstown, Pennsylvania before arriving at Ohio University in 1900 as anEnglish professor. After President Alston Ellis died in 1920, and, again, in 1934, after the death of President Elmer Burritt Bryan, Chubb was selected as acting president of OU. Edwin Watts Chubb retired from Ohio University in 1936 and he died in 1959 at the age of 93.
