Graphic Design "Quilt Pattern Sketchbook"

One of six different covers that portray aspects of the Ohio University and Athens communities. A junior studio art class within the School of Art at OU was asked to create a product. Led by Visiting Assistant Professor of Graphic Design Cindy Malon, the result was these sketchbooks that incorporates imagery from their beloved university.

Cover design by Presley Lammers, class of ‘10

The cover design of this journal was inspired by the graphic quilt patterns found on various barns throughout Southeast Ohio. There are over 20 historic quilt barns tucked away in the rolling hills of Athens County alone. One fall afternoon, I set our to visit these celebrated barns and was immediately inspired.
The design recreates a memorable scene from my adventures using a  repetitive matrix of four specific quilt patterns. When used as scenery, these  patterns are symbolic of the complex beauty of natural elements and their  interaction in a landscape. The color pallet is representational, and was chosen  from my documentation of the trip.

By embarking on this adventure, I was not only rewarded with spectacular  views of the Appalachian countryside, but also with the exhilarating feeling that  the next dirt road would take me to an unfamiliar setting. As a result, I am now  more deeply connected with my surroundings. The boundless, winding roads of  rural Athens County beckon me to explore and will remain a true wonder of my world.

Proceeds from the books benefit the students' senior BFA exhibition
