Graphic Design "Squirrel Sketchbook"

One of six different covers that portray aspects of the Ohio University and Athens communities. A junior studio art class within the School of Art at OU was asked to create a product. Led by Visiting Assistant Professor of Graphic Design Cindy Malon, the result was these sketchbooks that incorporates imagery from their beloved university.

Cover design by Jacob Szypka, class of ‘10

The inspiration for this design comes from the Eastern Grey Squirrel population on campus. One of the most noticeable characteristics of these abundant squirrels is the peculiar sound that they make.
These vocal squirrels are unique to the area; they were brought from  Harvard University in the early 1800’s. The Board of Trustees felt the university  would benefit from a picturesque wildlife and I certainly feel that this sentiment is  particularly definitive of the atmosphere on campus.
The color palette was chosen to express the alarming nature of the noise that the Eastern Grey Squirrel produces. The sound waves create movement and energy in this design and also serve to represent an expanding university.

Proceeds from the books benefit the students' senior BFA exhibition
